Large Petition Signed by Thousands in Community Calling for Renovations to the Jefferson Valley Mall
Yorktown, NY – On Wednesday, February 4, almost 1,500 signatures were collected in 36 hours on a petition, circulated by Rosanne Brackett, a candidate for Yorktown Town Council, urging WP Glimcher, the new owner of the Jefferson Valley Mall (“JV Mall”), to move forward with the mall’s long delayed renovation plans. The renovation plans were approved in 2013 by the Town Board at the request of Simon Properties, which subsequently spun off the mall to a new corporation.
Explaining why she started the petition, Brackett said, “I couldn’t sit by any longer and watch the decline of this great asset in our community. We’ve got to do what we can to get this project back on track and moving forward. The success of the JV Mall is vital to the continued health of our community. The mall provides shopping opportunities, employment opportunities and of course, significant tax dollars to the Lakeland School District and to the Town of Yorktown.”
In 2013, the Yorktown Town Board approved plans to update the mall, originally built in 1983, and to add 31,992 square feet to the existing 556,000 square feet structure. The plans include renovating the former theater space as well as modifying the food court area to accommodate a new mall entrance on the Route 6 side. A new attractive entrance is also planned for the Lee Boulevard side, plus new signage on the exterior of the building designed to attract shoppers in passing cars.

“The JV Mall is in a downward spiral,” Brackett said. “If something isn’t done soon, we’ll lose it forever. Once lost, we may never be able to replace it.” Not willing to sit back and let this happen, in addition to circulating the petition, Brackett has placed calls and had conversations Simon Properties, who is currently managing the mall as well as the corporate offices of WP Glimcher, the current owners. She said she’s hoping that the growing number of signatures on the petition will show the new owner that the community is eager to work with the company. “We want to show our support for the mall. We want WP Glimcher to know that the mall has a strong and loyal customer base in Yorktown and the surrounding area. We want to do what we can be save the mall.”
