More Heat, Humidity In Parts Of Hudson Valley

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — Hot, humid and bad air. It seems as if the weather in the Hudson Valley is set on repeat.

It is going to be hot again in southern Westchester and parts of the mid-Hudson Valley.

There is a heat advisory in southern Westchester — heat index values up to 101 Friday — that is in effect until 8 p.m. Saturday.

In the mid-Hudson Valley, the heat advisory is for Dutchess, western Columbia and eastern Ulster counties. It's in effect from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday. You can expect heat index values between 95 and 100.

Health officials say to drink plenty of fluids and stay in air-conditioned rooms and out of the sun. If you have to be outside, do strenuous activities in the early morning or evening.

Along with the heat and humidity, which lead to the high heat indices, there is an air quality alert for Rockland and Westchester counties until 11 p.m. Friday.

The air quality levels in outdoor air are predicted to be greater than an air quality index value of 100 for ozone.

And under the category of "hazardous weather outlook," there is a chance of thunderstorms Friday afternoon in Dutchess, western Columbia and easter Ulster counties. Additional isolated to scattered thunderstorms are possible Saturday.

For Orange, Putnam, Rockland and Westchester counties, no hazardous weather is expected for Friday, but showers and thunderstorms are likely this weekend, meteorologists said.

Here is the forecast through the weekend for northern Westchester County from the National Weather Service:

  • Friday: A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after noon. Mostly sunny, with a high near 89. West wind 5 to 7 mph.
  • Friday Night: A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 2am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 70. Calm wind.
  • Saturday: Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly after 2pm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Partly sunny, with a high near 86. Calm wind becoming south around 6 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
  • Saturday Night: Showers and thunderstorms likely before 8pm, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm between 8pm and 2am, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2am. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 70. Southeast wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.
  • Sunday: Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly after 2pm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 80. South wind 3 to 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
  • Sunday Night: Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly before 8pm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 67. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
