An Open Discussion for Black/African American Women

This Discussion is open to Black/African women nationwide who have or have had a breast, ovarian, or any gynecological cancer diagnosis.

(Yorktown Heights, NY) Support Connection, Inc. announces a free program: An Open Discussion for Black/African American Women. This Discussion is open to Black/African women nationwide who have or have had a breast, ovarian, or any gynecological cancer diagnosis.

Support Connection recognizes that a cancer diagnosis brings unique issues, concerns, and considerations to women in the Black/African American community. The organization invites you to join in an open discussion, which will be co-facilitated by a Support Connection peer counselor and Ebony-Joy Igbinoba, one of Support Connection’s 2022 Support-A-Walk Ambassadors.

This is an opportunity to connect with other Black/African American women coping with questions such as:

  • How to advocate: Feeling marginalized in the medical community? Facing racial and gender discrimination when addressing cancer care needs as a Black/African American woman? How to educate your medical team regarding unique cultural needs.
  • Medical mistrust: Feeling confident your medical team is recommending best treatment options available to all, regardless of race or socioeconomic status.
  • Managing finances during a cancer diagnosis. What resources can help?
  • Managing emotional issues due to a cancer diagnosis. Where to find support?
  • All topics of interest are welcome.

This is not an educational forum. It is a discussion group where concerns, experiences and information can be exchanged. The Open Discussion format presents a valuable opportunity to connect with others with similar concerns, who understand what you’re going through, and a chance to help one another by sharing information, resources, and coping strategies.
