YORKTOWN, NY — The Granite Knolls Sports Complex was officially opened Sunday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by many who participated in the project spanning the past decade. The complex in Shrub Oak was originally envisioned back in 2009.

Controversy over the $6 million project included what part the company building the natural gas pipeline through Yorktown would play. The total cost and the amount of traffic that would be generated on Stony Street were other issues.

The sports complex includes multi-purpose fields, a baseball field with a press box and bleachers, a golf putting green, basketball courts, handball courts, a pavilion, picnic area, playground equipment, trails and restrooms on 15 acres. It had a "soft opening" in the spring as the turf fields opened for use.

Yorktown Supervisor Elect Matt Slater was on hand for the Dec. 15 ceremony and released a statement:"The completion of the Granite Knolls Sports Complex has been a community effort that started ten years ago. It is now the region's premier municipal sports facility and I look forward to working with our community partners to continue building upon this wonderful asset for the benefit of every local resident."
