Election Results 2016: How the Hudson Valley Voted for President

Trump won three of seven counties in the lower Hudson Valley.

Three of the seven counties in the lower Hudson Valley preferred Donald Trump to Hillary Clinton in Tuesday's historical election, which resulted in Trump becoming president-elect.

Westchester County had the biggest margin of difference — there, voters went overwhelmingly for Clinton.

In addition, the Libertarian, Green and Independence parties racked up a few votes for their candidates. There were write-ins as well, but the county boards of election have not yet specified who got those votes.

Here is the county-by-county breakdown:

  • Rockland County went for the Hillary Clinton/Tom Kaine ticket. The Democratic slate received 61,373 votes, while the Trump/Mike Pence slate received 51,575 — about 41 percent of the vote, according to unofficial results from the Rockland County Board of Elections. Libertarian Gary Johnson picked up 2,096 votes, while Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein picked up 1,245. In Rockland, a full 1,082 voters wrote in someone else, close to 1 percent of the vote.
  • In Putnam County, voters preferred Trump. He collected 25,241 votes while Clinton received 17,363 votes. In Putnam, the third-party slate headed by Johnson picked up 1,039 votes on the Libertarian and Independence party lines. The Green Party slate headed by Stein received 543 votes. Also, 357 Putnam voters wrote in someone else for president.
  • In Westchester County, almost two-thirds of voters cast their ballots for the Clinton/Kaine Democratic ticket, according to unofficial results. They received 245,670 votes, or 65 percent of the total. President-elect Trump and his running mate Pence garnered 121,643 votes — or 32 percent. The Libertarian ticket of Johnson and Weld only received 7,185 votes — 2 percent. The Green Party’s Stein got 4,008, or 1 percent. Write-in votes were not reported.
  • In Dutchess County, the Trump/Pence ticket received the most votes —58,163. The Clinton/Kaine ticket got 56,874. Johnson and Weld received 2,198 on the Independence line and 1,106 on the Libertarian line, for a total of 3,304. Stein and the Green Party brought up the rear with 1,858 votes, according to unofficial results. There were 1,271 write-in votes.
  • In Ulster County, Clinton received 40,010 votes, 51 percent of the vote. Trump garnered 32,962 votes. Stein did well for the Green Party, with 2.5 percent of the total: 1,986 votes. The Libertarian and Independence parties picked up 746 and 1,430 votes.
  • In Orange County, Trump won 51 percent of the vote, with 72,129 votes to Clinton’s 63,037. Johnson picked up 3,570 votes on the Libertarian and Independence party lines while Stein received 2,017 for the Green Party. There were 1,129 write-in votes.
  • In Columbia County, Clinton narrowly defeated Trump, who received 12,750 votes to Clinton’s 13,123. There were 278 write-ins. Stein received 537 votes. Johnson picked up 839 votes on the Libertarian and Independence party lines.
