Somers To Create School Security Taskforce

After two threats this spring, the Board of Education has hired a consultant.

SOMERS, NY — The Somers Board of Education continues work to increase security at the district's schools.

District officials have hired a consultant to do a safety and security audit of the schools. At their June 12 meeting, the trustees OK'd a contract with Altaris Consulting Group for $8,400, according to TAPInto Somers. The trustees also plan to create a security advisory committee.

The action comes after two threats this spring touched Somers.

In May, a Chappaqua boy was arrested after texting a Somers girl about shooting up her school and his. She does not attend school in the district.

June 1, someone scrawled a threat on the wall of the boy's bathroom at Somers Middle School that apparently was meant to get another student in trouble.

Still, upset parents complained when Superintendent Dr. Raymond H. Blanch called the incident a horrible prank, even though his complete remarks made it clear the district was not dismissing the issue.

"While this event appears to be a horrible adolescent prank, we will not take any situation lightly," Blanch said at the time. "We are committed to ensuring the safety of our children."
