Storms Dominate Yorktown's Weekend Weather Outlook

Here are the latest details about the effects of hurricanes Irma and Jose around Somers.

SOMERS, NY — Hurricane remnants are dominating our thoughts this weekend. A warm, cloudy weekend with spotty showers and thunderstorms in the Hudson Valley is due to the remnants of Irma, the massive hurricane that devastated the Caribbean and brought Atlanta its first tropical storm. And Tropical Storm Jose could be a 'headache' this weekend through early next week, according to Hudson Valley Weather.

"As we look to the weekend, the trough from Irma will begin to slowly lift out to the northeast. But without a new frontal system to push in, our weather pattern won’t change too quickly," said Bill Potter of Hudson Valley Weather. "Looking at both Saturday and Sunday… we’ll see the clouds mixing with sunshine, but the warmth and the muggy air mass will not be quick to exit."

Thing is, as the end of Irma heads northeast, that's giving room for Jose to push northwest. (SIGN UP: Get Patch’s Daily Newsletter and Real Time News Alerts.)

"If Jose does track close to the coast, the strength and intensity of the winds would likely become diminished. We’ll certainly be watching this, but the ‘headache’ may become a migraine over the weekend," Potter said.

Even while Jose is far out to sea this weekend, the duration of rough surf may cause extensive beach erosion along the New York coastline.

“The strength and frequency of rip currents will increase at a time when many lifeguards are no longer on duty and people may head to the beach to take advantage of building warmth,” AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski said.
