• City seeks $6.3 million grant for housing (transylvaniatimes.com) — Brevard is seeking a $6.3 million federal HUD grant to support 26 new affordable single-family homes and emergency repairs for 10 existing homes in the Rosenwald neighborhood. City officials say Brevard’s track record with rural housing makes it competitive for the Pathways to Removing Obstacles to Housing program, and they hope to hear soon whether the application is approved.
   

• City OKs misdemeanor penalties for loitering, other offenses (transylvaniatimes.com subscription) — Brevard City Council has approved changes allowing misdemeanor charges for loitering, public intoxication, and trespassing, reversing a recent period when only civil penalties were allowed. Police say most cases will be low-level misdemeanors, and council members stressed they don’t want to criminalize homelessness while still responding to rising complaints downtown and encouraging use of local service providers.
   

• Mountain Times Publications hires Georgia Dixon as newest reporter (wataugademocrat.com) — A new regional reporter for Mountain Times Publications mentions spending summers hiking, exploring local culture, and attending the White Squirrel Festival in Brevard, underscoring the town’s regional draw.
