Arrest Made In Charlotte Apartment Fire That Displaced 130

CMPD says a suspect has been arrested for his role in an apartment complex fire in Charlotte fire officials say was intentionally set.

CHARLOTTE, NC -- A 20-year-old man has been arrested as a suspect in what Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say was his role in setting a fire in an apartment complex that displaced 130 residents and caused an estimated $1.3 million in damages.

Jesus Reyes Lopez was arrested July 20 for his involvement in the fire that broke out in the early morning hours July 17 at the Woodscape Apartments at 5612 Farm Pond Lane, CMPD announced Thursday. He is expected to be charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder, first-degree arson, and damage to property by use of an incendiary device.

About 40 apartment units at the were affected by the early morning fire, which took more than 50 firefighters about an hour to get under control. Charlotte Fire Department officials, however, were able to determine early on in their investigation that the fire had been intentionally set.
