CMPD Nabs Suspect Wanted In String Of Vehicle Breakins

CHARLOTTE, NC — A 19-year-old suspect faces numerous felony charges in an alleged string of crimes that includes at least 16 vehicle break-ins, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police.

Early Aug. 1, CMPD received numerous reports of car breaking and enterings on Old House Circle in southeast Charlotte. Security camera footage obtained by officers showed the suspect pulling on vehicle door handles and entering a vehicle.

CMPD distributed the video footage to officers, who observed a suspect matching the description and obtained a license plate number for a vehicle he was in the next day. Based upon that information, detectives were able to identify the suspect as 19-year-old Asmir Halilic and obtained four warrants for his arrest, according to CMPD.

Officers spotted Halilic behind the wheel of a vehicle Aug. 3 in the same area of the city on Sam Newell Road and conducted a traffic stop. He was arrested on the four warrants and officers found multiple stolen items in his vehicle, according to the police report. During an interview at the police station, Halilic reportedly confessed to the Aug. 1 breaking and enterings, as well as others in the area, CMPD said.

In total, Halilic has been charged with numerous felonies including 16 counts of breaking and entering of a motor vehicle, theft of a gun, at least seven counts of misdemeanor larceny, possession of stolen property, as well as possession of marijuana.
