$1K Reward Offered After Exploding Mortar Injures Officer: Video

When the mortar exploded, the CMPD officer's clothing caught fire and he sustained second-degree burns.

CHARLOTTE, NC β€” Charlotte police are offering a reward up to $1,000 for information after someone threw a soda-can sized mortar at officers Saturday night. When the mortar exploded, it caught an officer's clothing on fire, leaving him with second-degree burns and shrapnel wounds in his face and arms, CMPD said.

The unnamed male officer, who is an 11-year veteran of the police department, lost hearing for two days, according to CMPD.

"Despite his injuries, he pushed through the pain and worked the remainder of his 14-hour shift," CMPD said.

The department released a 14-second video clip of body camera footage of the May 30 incident, which shows the moment the mortar explodes.

"Please help us identify the suspect so no more officers or community members are victimized by the suspect. You can leave information about this anonymously with [Charlotte Crime Stoppers] and earn a reward of up to $1,000."
