Police Chief Pledges Accountability In Wake of Floyd Death

"The actions of a few officers have broke the public trust," Mooresville Police Chief Ron Campurciani said in a letter to the community.

MOORESVILLE, NC — Police officers in Mooresville hold themselves accountable to the highest of standards, Police Chief Ron Campurciani said in an open letter to the community released Tuesday. The message comes in the wake of widespread national outcry following the death of Minnesotan George Floyd killed by police during an arrest.

"Unfortunately, the actions of a few officers have broken the public trust for many in law enforcement," he said.

Floyd, 46, died Monday after being stopped by Minneapolis police investigating a reported forgery. Video from the scene showed former police officer Derek Chauvin kneeling on a handcuffed Floyd's neck as Floyd cried out, saying he couldn't breathe.
