Coronavirus: NC Airports To Receive $284 Million From CARES Act

Charlotte-Douglas International will receive a $135 million grant through the CARES Act. Nationwide, airports will receive $10 billion.

CHARLOTTE, NC — Charlotte Douglas International Airport will receive $135 million in funding as part of the CARES Act being distributed during the new coronavirus pandemic, the Department of Transportation announced.

The airport is among 72 airports in North Carolina set to receive nearly $284 million in aide, according to U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine L. Chao. Nationwide, airports will receive $10 billion as part of the $2 trillion CARES Act, also known as the coronavirus stimulus program.

"This $10 billion in emergency resources will help fund the continued operations of our nation's airports during this crisis and save workers' jobs," said U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao.

Airport traffic throughout the state have all but shuttered during the coronavirus pandemic, leading to layoffs and facility belt tightening. More than 700 workers staffing shops, driving buses and serving in restaurants at Charlotte-Douglas International lost their jobs in recent weeks. In Raleigh, passenger traffic at Raleigh-Durham International plunged 96 percent since this time last year, prompting the RDU Airport Authority to slash its budget by almost a third, the Charlotte Observer reported.

Small municipal airports throughout the state will receive grants ranging from $1,000 to $69,000.

  • Smith Reynolds Airport (Winston-Salem) — $157,000
