Expired Food, Mishandling Raw Chicken: Restaurant Inspections
One area restaurant had food weeks past its expiration, and an employee who didn't wash their hands after touching raw chicken.

CHARLOTTE, NC — One Charlotte area restaurant had 15 health code violations that included food found to be more than two weeks past its expiration, and an employee who didn’t wash their hands after touching raw chicken, according to a recent report by county health officials.

Some of the lowest health inspection ratings for recently inspected Charlotte-area restaurants were given to the following restaurants, include one area kitchen that saw its rating drop to a "B.”

Light Rail Family Restaurant, located at 8045 South Boulevard, received a health score of 81.5/B on July 6 after an inspection found 15 health code violations. There, an inspector found out-of-date mashed potatoes, coleslaw, chicken, broth, greens, eggs and deli meat, some with an expiration date of June 20, according to the inspection report. An employee went from handling raw chicken to touching ready-to-eat french toast without washing their hands. Other infractions found include food kept at improper temperatures, no soap at the handwashing sink, and raw hamburger stored above ready-to-eat foods.
Lotus Buffet at 9605 N. Tryon Street brought its 87.5/B score up, but barely. It received a 90/A score during it’s July 10 inspection, which noted 9 violations. The inspection found open employee drinks sitting above restaurant food, unwashed vegetables sitting above prepped vegetables, an employee improperly washing their hands and pans and containers stacked wet.
