Labor Day Weekend Weather: More Rain Before A Sunny Holiday

Charlotte had begun to feel the remnants of Harvey Thursday morning, with heavier rains and possibly severe storms expected later.

CHARLOTTE, NC -- Thursday morning skies filled with rain in the Charlotte and Lake Norman region, with no chance of letting up until late in the Labor Day holiday weekend, forecasters say.

Having devastated Houston and much of the Gulf Coast in Texas and Louisiana, Harvey β€” now downgraded to a tropical depression β€” moved east into the Mississippi Valley on Thursday. The brunt of its power was being felt in an area stretching from central Kentucky to western Tennessee, where rainfall in excess of four inches was expected.

But, by Thursday morning, Georgia, particularly northwest Georgia, was getting a share of the deadly storm, too. (Get Patch real-time email alerts for the latest news in Charlotte β€” or other neighborhoods. And iPhone users: Check out Patch's new app.)

The National Weather Service issued a hazardous weather outlook Thursday morning for western and piedmont North Carolina.

According to the weather service, the Charlotte metro region will see what’s left of Harvey in the form of front pushing light to moderate rain that will also bring thunderstorms.

β€œSome flooding of low lying or poor drainage areas is possible where storms move repeatedly over the same location,” NWS said. By evening, thunderstorms could become strong, and include a threat of strong wind gusts.

There’s another chance for severe weather on Friday to include a β€œslight risk” for isolated tornadoes. β€œThe remnants of Harvey will cross the Tennessee Valley, continuing to spread deep moisture and shear across the area,” it said.
