Latest NC Coronavirus Numbers: 5,465 Cases, 131 Dead

Coronavirus outbreaks have been reported in 33 nursing homes and 10 residential care facilities, NC DHHS said Thursday.

CHARLOTTE, NC — Novel coronavirus claimed 14 more lives in North Carolina since Wednesday, bringing the statewide death toll to 131, NC Department of Health and Human Services said Thursday morning. There are now 5,465 people in North Carolina confirmed to have the new coronavirus, which causes COVID-19, and 452 related hospitalizations.

North Carolina's number of cases reported April 16 represents an increase of 342 confirmed cases in a day.

Mecklenburg County has the largest number of confirmed cases with 1,084 cases and 19 deaths, followed by Wake County (552 cases, one death), Durham County (350 cases, two deaths), Rowan County (214 cases, four deaths) and Cabarrus County (198 cases, three deaths).

One week ago, North Carolina had 3,651 confirmed cases, 65 deaths and 398 hospitalizations.

According to NC DHHS, a survey of nearly 90 percent of the state's hospitals shows that 719 of the available 3,128 ventilators in North Carolina are in use as of Thursday. That represents a nearly 23 percent of the state's ventilators are currently in use. When it comes to intensive care unit beds, 915 beds, or nearly 29 percent, of 3,223 beds are filled.

Data released Thursday shows in increase in the number of cases reported in congregate living facilities. There are currently 33 ongoing outbreaks in nursing homes in North Carolina, 10 outbreaks in residential care facilities, and six correctional facilities.

Statewide, those ages 25 to 49 continue to be the hardest hit category when it comes to the number of laboratory-confirmed cases, according to NC DHHS data, claiming 37 percent of the COVID-19 cases, followed by those ages 50 to 64 (28 percent of cases). While those 65 and older represent 27 percent of cases so far in the state, the age category has suffered 84 percent of coronavirus-related deaths in North Carolina, according to the data.

Globally, more than 2 million people have been infected and at least 140,773 people have died from the new coronavirus, Johns Hopkins reported Thursday afternoon. Of that total, more than 641,000 cases have been confirmed in the United States.
