Here are the top five stories in Charlotte today:

  1. Duty away from work called a Charlotte firefighter who jumped into action to save a life while he was on vacation with his family at a beach out of state. "A man drowning in Virginia Beach, Virginia was rescued by a Charlotte fire firefighter who was there on vacation. The incident happened at a beach when off-duty Charlotte fire firefighter Demario House was spending the Labor Day weekend with his two young sons," the Charlotte city government reported. (charlottenc.gov)
  2. "North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper wants the General Assembly to pass legislation exempting individuals from state income tax on the student loan forgiveness announced by President Joe Biden last month. The White House has said the value of that forgiveness — up to $20,000 for some — is exempt from federal income tax, citing language in the 2021 American Rescue Plan law. But North Carolina appears to be one of a half-dozen states where amounts would be subject to state tax without a change," WFAE reports. (WFAE)
  3. A cement truck caused a parking deck in Charlotte to buckle which resulted in it being closed. "The Charlotte Fire Department, building inspectors and other crews worked to ensure the integrity of a parking deck along East Morehead Street after a "partial failure" on the deck's top floor. The top level of the parking deck partially failed under the back wheels of a loaded, dry mix concrete truck. ... Crews inspected the integrity of the rest of the deck to see how they could get the truck out. Firefighters have placed temporary supports to hold up the parking deck floor," WCNC reports. (WCNC.com)
  4. Little artists from more than 30 local elementary schools helped to design and paint curbs for Bank of America ROVAL 400! In preparation for the 5th annual Bank of America Roval 400 at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Oct. 9, the speedway hosted this event that allowed the school children to express themselves in art. "Speedway leaders say it was back in 2018 when Dale Earnhardt Jr. first referred to the curbs as “turtles” and the name stuck. Six fifth-grade classes were selected to participate and show off their creativity as they decorated a “turtle” with a literary theme. The painted “turtles” will be placed along the course and featured throughout the race weekend," WCBD News 2 reports. (WCBD News 2)
  5. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools is set to receive access to a financial course from Michael Jordan (NBA legend) and the Jordan Brand. "The Next Gen Personal Finance (NGPF) grant will help almost 500,000 students in 639 high schools. The one-time grant is modeled after the NGPF’s Financial Equity and Empowerment (FEE) Grant program, which began in 2020 as part of the organization’s commitment to increase access to financial education within school districts serving majority Black and Hispanic students." WBTV reports. (WBTV)
