Here are the top six stories today in Charlotte:

  1. You don't have to be an Olympian to learn how to curl! Charlotte Curling will host eleven “Learn To Curl” events in September as they continue to grow this fun sport by introducing and educating anyone who’s interested. “Learn To Curl” events are a great way to try the age-old sport of curling, which is accessible to most ages and ability levels. The sport has even been adapted for athletes in wheelchairs. You’ll be shown the basics and intricacies of curling, as well as experience the camaraderie of the sport," K104.7 reports. (K104.7)
  2. YouTube superstar "MrBeast" who hails from North Carolina is launching his own restaurant in New Jersey! Fox 8 reports, "MrBeast, Jimmy Donaldson, is a popular YouTube star with over 100 million followers. ... After the pandemic rushed the food industry, that is when he launched his delivery-only fast food chain MrBeast Burger. The restaurant went without a permanent location, until now. MrBeast is now partnering with Virtual Dining Concepts to launch MrBeast Burger. On Sunday, September 4, Donaldson opened the doors to his first physical location at the American Dream Mall in New Jersey." (Power 98)
  3. "Transportation leaders in North Carolina are aiming for zero deaths on the roadways through the Vision Zero Action Plan. The plan is a collaborative effort among several communities that "unites engineers, educators, emergency responders and law enforcement in hopes of making roads in the Tar Heel state safer for everyone...In Charlotte, as of August 2022, 14 pedestrians have died,"Spectrum News reports. (Spectrum News)
  4. "The average price of a gallon of regular gas in Charlotte fell 6.3 cents over the last week, sitting at $3.50 as of Tuesday. ... That’s according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 665 stations. It represents the twelfth straight week of declines. The price is 32 cents lower than the previous 10-year high of $3.82 a gallon on Sept. 6. The cheapest station in the city is $3.17 per gallon as of Sept. 5 while the most expensive is $4.59 a gallon, a difference of $1.42 per gallon," WBTV reports. (WBTV)
  5. "As Charlotte leaders continue seeking solutions to increase affordable housing inventory, one option may be to build more accessory dwelling units. ADUs are apartments or guest houses typically built over someone’s garage or as a separate building in the backyard. In the recently adopted Unified Development Ordinance, the city of Charlotte is looking to relax regulations on ADUs so more can be built. Little said ADU revamps typically cost homeowners anywhere from $150,000 to $300,000," WCNC reports. (WCNC.com)
  6. As a result of the pandemic, an overwhelming number of people are experiencing mental health issues and North Carolina's mental health system is struggling under the weight. "Decades ago, North Carolina legislators sought to change the way mental health care is delivered. They closed psychiatric hospitals arguing that patients would be better treated in the community, in less restrictive settings. Mental health experts agreed that the deinstitutionalization of mental health — a movement taking place across the country in the early 2000s — was a good idea. But in North Carolina, state lawmakers never fully followed through with the money for it. This left the state with an inadequate supply of both inpatient beds and community care options. Twenty years later, North Carolina is reaping the results of that chronic underfunding," Charlotte Post reports. (Charlotte Post)
