NC Coronavirus: 6,951 Cases, Death Toll Now At 213
The coronavirus death toll in North Carolina jumped by more than 30 overnight. Here's a breakdown of case numbers by county.
NORTH CAROLINA — The death toll from novel coronavirus in North Carolina grew by 34 deaths overnight, bringing the total of lives lost to 213, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services said Tuesday morning.
The new batch of data released April 21 by state public health officials shows that after completing more than 83,300 tests, there are now 6,951 confirmed cases of the new coronavirus, which causes COVID-19, in North Carolina. The new total indicates an increase of 187 new cases since Monday.
Hospitalizations also rose by 54 overnight to 427, NC DHHS said.

The number of outbreaks confirmed in congregate living facilities in the state, such as nursing homes and residential care facilities, continues to rise as deaths reported in these facilities claim about 45 percent of the state's death toll.

As of Tuesday, at least 1,869 people have tested positive at North Carolina congregate living facilities as COVID-19 outbreaks were reported in 38 nursing homes, 14 residential care facilities and at least 11 correctional facilities, NC DHHS said.
Heath officials say they expect the numbers to go up as more tests become available.
According to NC DHHS, a survey of 90 percent of the state's hospitals shows that 713 of the available 3,146 ventilators in North Carolina are in use as of Tuesday. That represents a nearly 23 percent of the state's ventilators are currently in use. When it comes to intensive care unit beds, 929 beds, or nearly 29 percent, of 3,223 beds are filled.
Globally, more than 2.5 million have been infected by COVID-19, and more than 171,810 people have lost their lives, Johns Hopkins University reported Tuesday morning. In the U.S., at east 42,458 people have died from COVID-19.
As of Tuesday morning, coronavirus cases have been confirmed in 93 of the state's 100 counties. No cases have been reported in Graham, Swain, Madison, Yancey, Avery, Hyde, and Camden counties, according to state officials.
