Pedestrian Hit, Killed By CMPD Officer Responding To A Crash

A pedestrian crossing a street was hit and killed by a CMPD marked patrol car early Saturday morning as an officer responded to a call.

CHARLOTTE, NC -- A pedestrian was struck and killed in uptown by a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department patrol car early Saturday morning as the officer and others in two other patrol cars responded to a call that a car had struck a building.

The officers in the three patrol cars were en route to the vehicle accident scene at 810 Morehead Street early July 8, when CMPD officer Phillip Barker’s marked police car struck a pedestrian crossing Morehead Street near Euclid Avenue around 3:20 a.m. The victim was pronounced dead on the scene by paramedics.

Officer Barker, who has been on the CMPD force since January 2016, was taken to Presbyterian Hospital for minor injuries.

The incident is being investigated by CMPD’s Major Crash unit, as well as its Internal Affairs, which is standard procedure in officer-involved fatalities to ensure all policies and procedures are followed, CMPD said.
