📰 News we're reading

1. Local News Roundup: CMS begins classes amid leadership turmoil; Bovino makes stop in Charlotte; Graham wins SC U.S. Senate runoff (wfae.org) — Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools students are heading back to class while the school board prepares to release a long-awaited summary of its investigation into Superintendent Crystal Hill by late September. Also in Charlotte, former Border Patrol leader Gregory Bovino visited Manolo's Bakery, drawing renewed attention to last fall's controversial immigration operation that led to about 400 detentions.

2. Violent crime down in Uptown Charlotte, more enforcement resources being added (wbtv.com) — Violent crime in Uptown Charlotte is down 30% this year, and police are adding more officers to keep nightlife areas safer. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are also pushing a 9 p.m. youth curfew, while city leaders stress pairing any new rules with more safe spaces and programs for teens.

3. Uptown Charlotte food trucks may see extended hours to boost sales (wsoctv.com) — Food truck owners in Uptown Charlotte could soon see their midnight curfew pushed back to better match nearby nightlife hours, easing a major hit to late-night sales. Center City Partners and city leaders say the temporary curfew has reduced crime, but they're now weighing a 2 a.m. closing time to balance safety with protecting small businesses.

4. Curfews, Toll Lanes, and Community Pushback City of Charlotte (opgov.news) — Charlotte City Council is weighing a 9 p.m. youth curfew and the $4 billion I-77 South toll lane project, drawing sharp pushback from residents worried about policing, neighborhood impacts, and transit priorities. Council also tightened sidewalk parking rules, closed portions of two streets, and approved funding for youth diversion programs, signaling significant changes for daily life across the city.
