GASTON COUNTY, NC — Hours after a teenage boy stranded on an island surrounded by flood waters was rescued west of Charlotte Tuesday, rescue crews continue to search for his missing friend. The pair became separated while swimming in the swollen river Monday evening, according to reports.

Ethan Danny Britt, 14, was reported missing to Gaston County Police around 11 p.m. Monday evening.

On the morning of June 11, authorities responded to a bridge on Stanley Spencer Mountain Road at the South Fork Catawba River in Lowell, NC, after receiving a call about a stranded person in the water.

The stranded boy was rescued after he was spotted on an island in the river by a motorist on a nearby bridge who saw him waving for help, Fox 46 reported. The teen told authorities that he and Britt were swimming when the strong current separated them.

Gaston County rescue crews, as well as Charlotte Fire Department and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department continue to search for Britt, GPD said Tuesday afternoon.

Britt is described as a 5-foot, 4-inch tall white male with brown hair and eyes, and weighing about 140 pounds, according to Gaston Police Department. He also has a scar under his right eye, police said.
