CHARLOTTE, NC — The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation has opened an investigation into an overnight officer-involved shooting that left a 17-year-old armed robbery suspect injured, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said Friday.

The incident occurred in the Waterford Square apartment complex shortly after midnight in the 7900 block of Waterford Tide Loop in Charlotte.

According to CMPD, off-duty Officer Emily Bishop and her husband were walking through the parking lot of the complex when they were approached by multiple subjects who attempted to rob them at gunpoint.

Bishop, who was hired by CMPD in June 2018, was not injured during the incident. Per department policy when an officer discharges their weapon, she has been placed on administrative leave.

“Information and evidence gathered also revealed that the same suspects committed a burglary and armed robbery of a resident in the same apartment complex just minutes prior to the officer-involved shooting incident,” CMPD said.

WSOC reported that SBI investigators were “combing through two scenes that were apparently connected.”
