Stranded Passenger Breaks Airport Window After Flight Cancelled

A 24-year-old woman was cited for property damage after she broke a window at Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

CHARLOTTE, NC — For days, thousands of passengers transiting through Charlotte Douglas International Airport have grappled with unexpected cancellations of American Airline regional flights due to a computer glitch. Monday night, amid a new round of delays, that frustration led a stranded passenger to break an airport window, according to reports.

Kathy Irene Albright, 24, was cited for property damage by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police for breaking the window near the valet parking station on the upper level around 11 p.m. June 18.

“The witnesses told officers on scene that the female broke the window then walked away from the area,” CMPD said in a report. Responding officers found Albright nearby.

Describing Albright as an “irate passenger,” one local news report said she swung her hand and hit the glass out of frustration that her flight had been canceled.

Thousands of air travelers found themselves grounded at the airport last Thursday evening after a "technical issue" canceled as many as 120 American Airlines flights operated by its regional carrier, PSA Airlines, in the Queen City.

The flight cancellations stretched beyond Charlotte, and affected 275 flights overall in the U.S. June 14. More cancellations occurred Sunday and by Monday, at least 200 flights were canceled.

According to reports, the IT glitch behind the flight cancellations created a problem tracking crew assignments.

By Tuesday, however, PSA Airlines said it had stabilized it’s IT system, WBTV reported.
