17 Dead From Coronavirus Outbreak At Cornelius Nursing Home

The deaths reported at the Cornelius facility represent 8 percent of the COVID-19 deaths reported at NC nursing homes since late March.

CORNELIUS, NC— A novel coronavirus outbreak at Autumn Care nursing home in Cornelius has claimed the lives of at least 17 residents, according to new data released Tuesday by state public health officials. The deaths reported at the Cornelius facility represent 8 percent of the 211 deaths reported at nursing homes throughout North Carolina since late March.

In addition to the deaths, 39 residents and 21 staff members who work at the nursing home were confirmed to have the new coronavirus, which causes COVID-19, according to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.

As of Tuesday, 12,256 people had tested positive for COVID-19 and at least 452 people had died from coronavirus illness in North Carolina since late March.

Congregate living facilities, such as nursing homes, residential care facilities and correctional facilities, account for almost a third of the known positive cases in the state. As of Tuesday, at least 3,388 people had tested positive in North Carolina congregate living facilities as COVID-19 outbreaks were reported in 60 nursing homes, 23 residential care facilities and at least 15 correctional facilities, NC DHHS said.

Employees of the nursing home, which is located at 19530 Mt. Zion. Avenue in Cornelius, told Cornelius Today "there was a lack of personal protective equipment for staff."
