📰 News we're reading

• Shhh... New Speakeasy Opens in Town (corneliustoday.com) — A new 1920s-style cocktail lounge called The Alleyway is opening next to Harp & Crown in the heart of Cornelius, offering specialty drinks, jazz, and a TV-light, conversation-focused atmosphere. Owners Mary and Pat Maiorino have transformed the space into a 75-seat speakeasy-style bar with themed parties, live jazz on weekends, and AI-created vintage portraits of local regulars.

• Huntersville residents prepping for fight over planned gas station and car wash (wfae.org) — Cornelius residents may soon weigh in on two big development stories: a previously proposed 'English countryside inn' that passed the town board and a potential Wegmans on Statesville Road that would require a new conditional rezoning. While Huntersville neighbors organize against a large gas station and car wash nearby, Cornelius officials are watching for a Wegmans rezoning filing that could take months to move through the process.

• Feds Want AI Streaming Fraudster Who Stole $8M From Artists Sent To Prison For A Long Time (newsbreak.com) — Federal prosecutors want a Cornelius man, Michael Smith, sent to prison for several years after he admitted running an AI-powered streaming fraud that siphoned more than $8 million from music royalties. Smith, arrested at his Cornelius home in 2024, faces sentencing in Manhattan next week as prosecutors argue his massive bot-driven scheme hurt legitimate artists and deserves a tough penalty.
