Death Toll At Cornelius Nursing Home Now At 18 Residents

CORNELIUS, NC— A novel coronavirus outbreak at Autumn Care nursing home in Cornelius has claimed the lives of at least 18 residents, according to new data released Thursday by state public health officials.

In addition to the deaths, 40 residents and 23 staff members who work at the nursing home were confirmed to have the new coronavirus, which causes COVID-19, according to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.

As of Friday, 13,868 people had tested positive for COVID-19 and at least 527 people had died from coronavirus illness in North Carolina since late March.

Congregate living facilities, such as nursing homes, residential care facilities and correctional facilities, account for more than a quarter of the known positive cases in the state. As of Friday, at least 3,613 people had tested positive in North Carolina congregate living facilities as COVID-19 outbreaks were reported in 62 nursing homes, 25 residential care facilities and at least 16 correctional facilities, NC DHHS said.
