Lights, Camera, Action (for Literacy)!
Cumberland County Schools’ Belinda Cashwell, the director of Media Services, andvMelody Boyd, a director of School Support, will appear as guests on WTVD ABC 11’s “Heart of Carolina Perspectives” on Sunday, October 16 at 11 a.m. on Cable Channel 11.
The two will talk with Angela Hampton, the show’s host, about the importance of literacy and the school system’s Oct. 22 Reading Rocks! Walk-A-Thon & 5K Run, which is looking to attract 25,000+ participants.
Reading Rocks! Spirit Week
In observance of the Oct. 22 Reading Rocks! Walk-A-Thon & 5K Run, the students, faculty, and staff at Glendale Acres Elementary School will celebrate reading Monday, October 17 – Friday, October 21 as follows:
Monday, October 17 – Hats Off to Reading (to wear a favorite hat)
Tuesday, October 18 – Cheer On Reading (to wear a favorite sports team t-shirt or sweatshirt)
Wednesday, October 19 – Crazy About Reading (to wear a ‘crazy’ hair style or pair of socks)
Thursday, October 20 – Snuggle Up to a Good Book (to wear a favorite sweat pants or pajamas)
Friday, October 21 – School Spirit Day (to wear Glendale Elementary t-shirt)
25,000+ Expected at Walk-A-Thon & 5K Run for Literacy

Get Out Your Walking Shoes
Nearly 25,000+ Cumberland County School students, staff, parents, business partners, and community members are planning to take part in the largest walk-a-thon Cumberland County has seen. The 8th Annual Reading Rocks! Walk-A-Thon for literacy starts at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 22 in Festival Park (Downtown Fayetteville).

Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. The 1.5-mile trek will wind past several historic downtown sites. Neon orange Reading Rocks! T-shirts will be worn by participants. All proceeds will be used to purchase books for the benefit of CCS’ students. Last year, more than $200,000 was raised and over 20,000 people participated.
5k Running Event
In conjunction with the Walk-A-Thon, the Cumberland County Education Foundation is sponsoring a 5K Run, which will begin in the parking lot of the Medical Arts Building at 7:00 a.m. Participants are being encouraged to pre-register at
www.active.com.
St. Patrick's Annual Fall Festival
Saturday, October 22 from 10a.m. to 4p.m. the school is holding their annual fundraiser event. Good food, bouncy castles, music and tons of games and family fun to welcome the fall weather.
