My name is Ken Shires, and I live and work right here in Hillsborough and also serving Durham, Chapel Hill, Mebane and Wake Forest. I have made it my mission to help seniors and their families navigate one of life's more meaningful transitions ā€” when living at home begins to feel less safe or manageable than it once did.
I know this territory personally. I walked it with my own mother, and more recently with my wife's mom. It is rarely straightforward, and it is almost always emotional. That experience is what led me to become a Certified Senior Transition Specialist.
What I offer is comprehensive and completely pro bono ā€” that is, free of charge to you.

I tour local communities regularly and meet weekly with care experts and professionals across the Triangle. I bring current, firsthand knowledge ā€” not a database.
The families I work with tell me they wish they had started the conversation sooner. There is real value in thinking ahead, before circumstances force a rushed decision.

Community School

Starting this summer, the school will be opening in a new, expanded location, at 311 Dowd Street, Durham, NC, allowing us to serve more students and families in the community. As we prepare for the 2026ā€“2027 school year, we are currently offering rolling kindergarten enrollment and are also welcoming applications for select open seats in other grade levels (Kā€“8).

Community School of Digital & Visual Arts is a tuition-free public charter school that focuses on creativity, hands-on learning, and building a strong, supportive school community where every child can thrive.

Who can stay with her? When family pitches in, they average 20 hours per week.
Solution? Senior living communities answer many important needs:
ā€¢ Nutrition: 3 meals a day with no dishes to wash.
ā€¢ Safety: Front door opens into the hallway of the community. Help with meds.
ā€¢ Transportation: Community provides transportation to medical appointments, shopping and outings.

Having worked through my motherā€™s increasing needs in aging and, more recently, those of my wifeā€™s Mom, I assist adult children who, likewise, are realizing their Momā€™s capacities are declining and needs are multiplying.
More specifically, I am offering to carefully align ā€œMomā€™sā€ individual needs with the variety of senior living options. I am a Senior Transition Specialist and I collaborate with value-based care expert, Tu Tu Cares. I have toured dozens of communities and have friends who are residents. My value-add includes guidance with needs assessment; comparing costs; timing of rate increases; what to ask/notice while touring. I can recommend specialists in powers-of-attorney, guardianship, veteransā€™ benefits, decluttering and move management. To defray the costs, I can even look at the suitability of expeditiously selling a family home about to be vacated. My services are complimentary.
