2/505th from the 82nd Slated to Deploy to Afghanistan in June

The Fort Bragg battalion will join existing forces and is expected to redeploy in the fall or winter months.

On Wednesday the Fort Bragg Public Affairs Office announced that one battalion from the 82nd Airborne Division will deploy this summer to assist the International Security Assistance Forces in Afghanistan.

Cmdr. Bill Speaks, U.S. Secretary of Defense Office, confirmed that the unit will be 3rd Brigade Combat Team's 2/505th Parachute Infantry Regiment in a Fayetteville Observer report on Wednesday night.

The battalion consisting of around 800 soldiers will deploy in June to join about 10,000 other 82nd Airborne soldiers already there according to Col. Kevin Arata, spokesman for the 18th Airborne Corps.

"These paratroopers of 2-505th are among the toughest, best equipped and best-led combat soldiers in the world and are ready to support this short-notice mission," Arata said to the Fayetteville Observer.

The battalion's deployment will allow ISAF to continue the momentum of disrupting, dismantling and defeating the insurgency while the Regional Commands re-posture and reposition their forces across Afghanistan.

As defined by the current strategy in Afghanistan, efforts continue to
transition the security lead to Afghan National Security Forces and working
with the Afghans to build an enduring national defense capability. The time
period of deployment for the 82nd Airborne Division forces is not known at
this time, but they will remain in place until no longer needed for their
assigned mission.

Lt. Gen. Frank G. Helmick, the former 18th Airborne Corps and Fort Bragg Commander addressed 14,000 troops that had just returned in December from Iraq. His focus was on the increase in violent incidents since the homecoming, encouraging the soldiers to seek out help.

The question with no measurable answer is how long the soldiers take to reintegrate and seek out care for their well being before being redeployed.
