A Humanitarian Murdered in Pakistan because of his faith

In Pakistan, it is considered a crime to practice a faith that is different from the majority; and even belonging to a different sect of Islam is life threatening. The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community—a peaceful, tolerant, and loving community—has yet again suffered a great loss on May 26th, 2014, due to the heinous hate crimes against their faith. 50-year-old US citizen and humanitarian, Dr. Mehdi Ali Qamar, was on a three-week medical mission in Rabwah, Pakistan, when militant extremists shot him 11 times in front of his wife and two-year-old son. He now joins the 137 Ahmadi Muslims that have been martyred in Pakistan for their faith in the past four years.

In 1974, Pakistan passed a constitutional amendment, declaring Ahmadi Muslims as “non-Muslims” and furthermore in 1984, passed anti-Ahmadi laws criminalizing religious practices of the Ahmadi Muslims, punishable by fine, imprisonment, or death. This has motivated many militant extremists to openly murder Ahmadi Muslims with impunity.

As response to such barbaric attacks, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community can only fight back with what true Islam has taught —prayer and patience. Our deepest condolences go out to Dr. Qamar’s family, and hope the perpetrators are swiftly brought to justice.
