Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!

A tribute to a truly good person who had the ability to make everyone smile.

School children of all ages commemorated an author today whose works transcend all age groups. Dr. Seuss, AKA: Theodor Seuss Geisel. Dr. Seuss was born on March 2, 1904 and left us his legacy upon his death in September, 1991.

I recall when he died - the year I graduated high school and I had received a most memorable graduation gift from a childhood teacher and mentor titled: "Oh the Places You'll Go".

Upon his death in the fall later that year, the book became a more treasured possession. I had always had fun reading his tongue twisting limericks growing up, but even now as an adult I can appreciate his levity and love for life and all things fun.

Many art projects went home today from elementary schools that were anchored around one of the 46 fictitious wonders by Dr. Seuss. Another elementary school had children dress up - there were many Thing 1 & Thing 2's, and lots of red and white striped hats. The local libraries had reading time and crafts featuring silly characters from many of the books that we all love.

This iconic author, poet and imaginative genius published 46 children's book, but 11 plays have been adapted from his work, to include four feature films. Make that five! Today, Dr. Suess' "The Lorax" hit the theaters today and it's an adaptation of Dr. Seuss' classic tale of a forest creature who shares the enduring power of hope. Sounds like a story for all ages.
