Have you made these Top 5 money mistakes?
Here are my Top 5 money mistakes. How many have you made? Do you want to know what I did different.
My daughter asked me a seemingly random question: “Mommy, what money mistakes have you made?” After I thought about it for a day or so, these are my Top 5:
- Buying investment products with front-end loads: These are additional fees that go directly to the company, and not into your account to grow. These are not broker fees or transaction costs. After I looked at the numbers, I realized I would need amazing returns to overcome these fees. So now, I only buy no-load investments.
- Whole life insurance policies: When I purchased, I had no children and was in my mid-20s. My policy was expensive and wasn't suitable for my situation. I cashed out and put the money I got back (which was way less than I put in) and used to purchase a term life policy. I now invest the difference.
- 72 month car loan: If I needed 72 months to pay it off, I couldn’t I afford it. Car values drop so much when driven off the lot. I now pay cash for used cars.
- Not monitoring my cell phone minute usage: Not overages, but not using enough. I was shocked that I was spending over $2/minute. I had to wait out the contract to move to a pre-paid plan. Instead of paying around $50/month, I now pay around $100/year and understand the real reason why I have a cell phone – for emergencies.
- Not reviewing my monthly checking account statement: I guess since I was so rich, I didn’t notice the $20 being taken from my account for almost 2 years. I could only get back the last 6 months, when I closed my account. I review my statement monthly, and I balance my ALL of my accounts at least weekly.
I am sharing so that, hopefully, you won't waste your hard earned cash, like I did. Share your top money mistake in the comments below.
