It's hard to tell by some previews if a movie is going to be appropriate for the kids or not. I came across a great smartphone app that has helped take the guesswork out of movie reviewing.
Kids-In-Mind. The app reviews and rates all current movies and those new to video. It ranks them according to a colored barcode on a scale 1 through 10 on sex/nudity, violence/gore, and profanity factors.
Warning: The Hobbit scored in the 6 range on violence -and there were many graphic decapitations throughout the movie, not making it suitable for younger children.
