Summer is quickly coming to a close and cooler weather will (hopefully!) start to follow. The beginning of September is a busy month, with great activities going on in the area for both kids and adults!

Smith Lake is hosting Movie Night at the Beach on Saturday, September 8 with a showing of Kung Fu Panda 2! Bring your chairs and blankets for this family friendly outing. Event is free and open to the public. Movie starts at 8:00 p.m.

The Cape Fear Botanical Gardens are hosting a Fall Concert Series titled “Journey through the Symphony.” Four evening concerts with each performance focusing on one of the instrument families in the orchestra. Experience the sound and learn the significance of each a section. Come and enjoy live performances in the Garden. Free admission for Garden members. Regular Garden admission applies.

Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church celebrate the 22nd Annual Greek Fest held on church grounds. This festival, going on Friday, September 7^th through Sunday, September 9^th, gives the Greek Community the opportunity to share Orthodox faith, history, and heritage, including food, music, dancing and a Grecian marketplace. Highlights will include: authentic Greek food and pastries; Greek and American beer and wine imports; Greek folk dance troupes; church tours; Greek culture exhibit and live Greek music by the Nick Trivelas Band.

Celebrate our town’s namesake with Lafayette’s “Party in Park” on Saturday, September 8^th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with cake and ice cream, live music, entertainment and fun for the whole family. Special kid’s events include: games, coloring, face-painting, bounce houses, shaved ice, pony rides and Truman, the mascot from Kidsville News! The celebration is held at Cross Creek Park and this event is free and open to the public!

Meet Transportation Museum staff at the Cumberland County Library at 3 p.m. on Sunday, September 9th for a stroll through Historic Downtown Fayetteville. The focus is the variety of architectural styles found in Fayetteville’s Downtown National Register District. These styles range from late 18th century Federal Period through the notable Art Deco and Modern style buildings of the 1940s and 1950s. Participants will learn the defining characteristics of many downtown structures, and some of the noted architects who designed them. This tour is free! Then join us again on Monday, September 10^th, at the Fayetteville Area Transportation and Local History Museum at 9 a.m. to learn about our local military heritage. Tour includes guided tours of the War of 1812 and Civil War exhibits at the museum as well as the rare opportunity to tour the Fayetteville Independent Light Infantry Museum and Armory, where participants will learn about the early militia system. Pre-registration is required for this tour. Participants will travel via bus but the tour does involve moderate walking. For more information about the tours call (910) 433-1457.

The Annual Cumberland County Fair is back in 2012 featuring vendors, live entertainment, local artisans, petting zoo and all traditional fair activities. The popular Racing Pigs can be seen daily, along with Hansen’s Spectacular Circus Acts! The Fair will take place at the Crown Coliseum September 7^th through the 12^th, and is open at various times during its duration.
