Charter School looks promising for Fort Bragg high school students

A charter school with up to 800 students could open on Fort Bragg in August 2013

 

High school students residing on Fort Bragg don't have many options for public schools and many opt out of attending known for past issues with crime and lower grade performance.

One of two formal meetings was held on Friday at Fort Bragg's Tolson Youth Center for the public on the topic and sparked an interest for opening a Charter School with the 60 families in attendance.

A charter school gets public funding but operate under different regulations than county schools within the district. Last June state lawmakers have lifted a cap on charter schools.

While the April 13 deadline is approaching for the interested party, The Romaine Group to apply for the charter, the land already has a tentative spot according to garrison commander, Col. Stephen Sicinski.

The prospective plot of land lies between Fort Bragg and Linden Oaks. Under the agreement, the Army would provide the land, congressional funds would pay for construction, and the Cumberland County school system would oversee the school.
