Cumberland County Hires New Assistant County Manager

After a competitive national search, County Manager Amy Cannon has hired Angel Wright-Lanier as the County’s next Assistant County Manager for General Government & Stewardship. Wright-Lanier fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Melissa Cardinali in June.

Wright-Lanier will begin her new job on Jan. 4. She comes to the County from the City of Fayetteville where she is the Assistant City Manager. In her current role she is responsible for oversight of Economic & Community Development, Corporate Communications, Human Relations, Airport and Transit services. Throughout her nearly 20-year career, she has managed numerous departments, to include Human Resources, Information Technology, two performing arts theaters, Planning, Facilities & Construction Management, Community Affairs, Inspections, Parks & Recreation and Library.

She started her career as a Finance Department staff analyst with the City of Raleigh and has moved into positions with progressively higher levels of responsibility throughout her career. She earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, a Master of Public Administration from the University of Chattanooga, and a Master of Science in Management Information Systems from Strayer University. She is currently earning a Doctor of Education degree in Leadership and Learning in Organizations from Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College of Education. She is a member of the International City/County Management Association and has recently achieved the Credentialed Manager certification from that organization.
