Cumberland County Represented Well at Battle of the Bands Competition

Congratulations to a good showing for Cumberland County high schools

The top sixteen high-stepping marching bands representing high schools from across North Carolina battled it out on Sunday at Fayetteville State University. Hundreds gathered in FSU’s Luther “Nick” Jeralds Stadium to witness the 3rd Annual North Carolina High Stepping Marching Band State Championship. Playing music from across time, waving flags, and twirling batons, the high school students made the battle fierce.

E.E. Smith, Westover, Pine Forest and Seventy-First high schools represented Cumberland County in the state competition. All Cumberland County schools earned the top three places of their respective divisions. E.E. Smith High School emerged victorious and was named the Grand Champion. They will go on to compete against bands from across the nation at in the 2011 National High Stepping Marching Band Championship that will take place in Charlotte, NC on Saturday November 12th.

1st Place - West Charlotte
2nd Place - Northwest Halifax
3rd Place - Phillip O. Berry

Class AAA
1st Place - Westover
2nd Place - Pine Forest
3rd Place - Rocky Mount

Class AAAA
1st Place - E.E. Smith
2nd Place - Seventy-First
3rd Place - Hillside

Grand Champion - E.E. Smith
1st Runner-Up - West Charlotte
2nd Runner-Up - Westover

High Flags Award - Hillside
High Dancers Award - E.E. Smith
High Drum Major Award - West Charlotte
High Percussion Award - Pine Forest
High General Effect Award E.E. Smith
High Marching Award - Rocky Mount
High Music Award - Phillip O. Berry
