Department Changes Name To Animal Services, Cumberland County

Cumberland County Animal Control has officially changed its name to Cumberland County Animal Services (CCAS), to better reflect the department’s goals and mission.

“The name change indicates that we’re here to be a part of the community and to provide services to the community – both to the people and to the animals,” CCAS Director Elaine Smith said.

The department enforces all state and local laws pertaining to the ownership, regulation and control of dogs, cats, and other domestic animals within the county. Its primary responsibilities include handling calls for animal neglect or cruelty, loose aggressive animals, injured or sick animals, animal bites, as well as wildlife inside the living space of a residence or business. Pet owners in need of assistance with their pets are encouraged to contact CCAS to find available local resources.

Due to COVID-19, Animal Services is open by appointment only. The department hours for pet adoptions, stray dog intakes and owner reclaims are 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Owner surrenders of pets are not being accepted at this time, and owners are encouraged to re-home their animals themselves before contacting the shelter as a last resort only.
