Fort Bragg Medic Nabs Welterweight Title

Growing up around the sport Sgt. Jesse Hertzog has branched out to MMA fighting.

Sgt. Jesse Hertzog, a medic in the 82nd Airborne Division won the Welterweight (155 pounds) title at the 2011 Army Combatives Championship. Hertzog is no stranger to the sport and grew up in a family of boxers. During a 16-month tour in Afghanistan, his peers persuaded him to switch to mixed martial arts (MMA).

Hertzog trains at the Fort Bragg combatives schoolhouse and off post. A blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, he fights as an amateur on his own time and was a combatives instructor on Fort Bragg.

“There’s nothing more alpha male in my mind than stepping into a ring with another alpha male and seeing who’s more dominant,” Hertzog said in an MMA Soldier interview last year.
