Fort Bragg: "Then and Now"

How Camp Bragg evolved into Fort Bragg.

Over the past several decades, Camp Bragg has steadily changed into what people have come to know as Fort Bragg, one of the country’s most dominating military bases. Time has taken its toll on the base, changing everything from buildings to roads to sewer lines. One thing that hasn’t changed has been the pride that comes along with being a soldier of Fort Bragg.

Camp Bragg came to fruition and offers photographs that compare soldiers of early days to those of today. Other images show how the barracks have changed for the better in the past 90 years, along with the main camp reservoir.

Erecting the housing and the rest of the buildings for the camp proved to be a very tough job for the engineers and the workers back in the late 1910s, and it left a sour taste in the mouth of the U.S government. In fact, it was this problem that prompted the government to hire workers from Mexico, Asia and other foreign countries to try and improve the building standards. However, with working conditions unfavorable for the new workers, the plan soon fell apart. Eventually the buildings were designed properly and the soldiers were able to rest easy knowing that the roofs were not going to cave in.

The reservoir, which has changed over the years, has always had one purpose: to provide water to the soldiers, and that has not failed in more than 80 years. Even though there have been other reservoirs built and the construction of a dam along with other waterways, the main reservoir still stands today as a reminder of what once was.
