Fort Lewis soldier could face death penalty for Afghan killings

PTSD may be a factor, but the soldier was plagued with past legal and financial woes

More details from public records are coming to light on Staff Sgt. Robert Bales, the 38-year-old, soldier and family man from Fort Lewis allegedly accused of killing 16 Afghans in cold blood.

Other news agencies have dug up past records showing a history of financial issues and legal woes including assault charges on a prior girlfriend resulting in 20 hours of anger management classes and, also a hit-and run accident, when Bales ran bleeding in military clothes into the woods, court records show. He told police he fell asleep at the wheel and paid a fine to get the charges dismissed, the records show as reported in a Huffington Post report.
