National Museum Day

May 19th is National Museum Day! We have several great museums to explore on Fort Bragg, and in Fayetteville and Cumberland County.

In honor of National Museum Day, we’ve outlined a few of the wonderful museums in the region. At the bottom of this post is a link to all museums in the area. Enjoy!

The Airborne & Special Operations Museum is the only facility that tells the comprehensive history of the US Army Airborne from Test Platoon to present day. Located in downtown Fayetteville, this Smithsonian-quality facility features life-size dioramas, full-size military equipment, a Vista-scope large-screen theater that screens ”Descending from the Clouds” and the Pitch, Roll & Yaw motion simulator. The simulator puts viewers through the paces of special operations training. www.asomf.org

The Museum of the Cape Fear Historical Complex offers three historic resources in one setting. The museum is a branch of the NC Museum of history. More: www.ncdcr.gov/ncmcf/Home.aspx

  • The Museum galleries tells the history of southeastern North Carolina from Native American times to the early 20th century.
  • Arsenal Park houses the remains of the Fayetteville Arsenal, which General Sherman burned during his infamous march through the Carolinas.
  • The 1897 EA Poe House interprets family life at the turn of the 20th century.

The 82d Airborne Division War Memorial Museum is one of the oldest and largest organizational museums in the Army system. With over 5,000 artifacts in the collection, and over one million photographs and documents in the archives, annual museum attendance exceeds 75,000.
