Most of us feel excitement for a fresh start at each New Year celebration. We make promises to ourselves, and set positive goals. Sometimes we even stick to them! But do you know the true meaning behind a resolution?
Dr. Caroline Cederquist, medical director for BistroMD explains, "It is supposed to be perceived as solving a problem, hence the root “solution.” With the prefix “re” we tend to make the same resolution and try to fix one problem over and over.
So, are you thinking about setting a goal that you've tried to reach before?

Here are a few alternative resolutions you can try for 2014:
1.Try something new. Take that yoga class or that teach yourself a new craft you've always wanted to try. You may find something you truly love to do!

2. Get some fresh air. Being outdoors can calm your mind and ease your stress. Find a place that you enjoy whether it’s a beach, wildlife sanctuary, arboretum, lake, etc. and go often.
3. Step away from the TV and computer. As difficult as it is to pull yourself away from constant incoming emails or your favorite TV show, it’s important to try. Research shows that children who spend too much time in front of screens are at a greater risk for obesity, have a harder time falling asleep, and don’t focus well.
4. Get more sleep. By getting more sleep, your entire outlook on life could change. Sleeping actually helps you burn fat, decrease stress, improve your immune system, and boost your mood.
There are other ways to better yourself and feel better without doing the same old new year’s resolution again and again. Your overall goal should focus on ways to be happy and healthy overall.
