The Oakwood School Recieves $10,000 In National Video Contest

School celebrates on Earth Day with tree planting event, entertainment and food!

After 4 weeks of competitive voting, Scotties, a leader in the tissue industry is pleased to announce that winners of the 2014-2015 Trees Rock® video contest. In the 3rd-5th grade category, the winners are the 3rd grade students of Ms. Nikki Grabill’s class from The Oakwood School in Greenville, NC. The school will receive $10,000 to be used towards building a greenhouse on campus where the students will grow their own vegetables.

Today on Earth Day, the whole school enjoyed a ceremonial tree planting, check presentation, live music, zumba dancing, and a lunch catered by The Scullery to celebrate their big win.

“We are a small, independent school, and while we have a supportive community, we knew it was going to take more than just our community to win,” said Grabill. “So we reached out to the rest of the country with a remake of Bruno Mars’ ‘Uptown Funk’ and Taylor Swift’s ‘Shake it Off’. Our videos reached a combined total of over 6,000 views on Facebook and several hundred on YouTube.”

All kids who entered the contest were required to create a video up to 3 minutes long on the importance of trees -- to themselves, their school, and their community. Students were encouraged to be as creative as possible in their entries – for example, by creating a poem, a play, a speech, a song, or a dance. After rigorous scrutiny by a panel of judges, entries from around the country were narrowed down to the 10 best in 3rd – 5th grade and the 10 best in 6th-8th grade the categories of most compelling relative to theme, clarity of message, and creativity.
