Soldiers Place Flags at Arlington for Memorial Day
More than 260,000 flags were placed in front of gravestones at Arlington National Cemetery in observance of Memorial Day.

ARLINGTON, Va. -- Soldiers placed more than 260,000 flags in front of gravestones at Arlington National Cemetery Thursday as part of the "Flag's In" tradition preceding Memorial Day weekend.
Soldiers from the 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) and 289th Military Police Company from Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall, Va., participated in the annual ritual to honor fallen veterans. During about a three-hour period, the Soldiers place flags in front of more than 260,000 graves and about 7,300 niches at the cemetery's columbarium.
Each year for the past 40 years, the 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment has honored America's fallen heroes by placing American flags before the gravestones and niches of service members buried at both Arlington National Cemetery and the U.S. Soldier's and Airmen's Home National Cemetery just prior to Memorial Day.
