Media advisory from the Fort Bragg Public Affairs Office.

FORT BRAGG, N.C. - A Summary Court Martial for Sgt. Travis Carden, an
infantryman assigned to 1st Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division,
Fort Wainwright, Alaska, took place August 22 at Fort Bragg. This was in
connection with the October 2011death of Pvt. Danny Chen in Afghanistan.
Sgt. Carden was charged and convicted of Uniform Code of Military Justice
Article 92, hazing Chen, and Article 93, maltreatment by calling him
racially disparaging names, and ordering him to perform pushups with his
mouth full of water.
He was sentenced to reduction in rank to E-4 and forfeiture of 2/3 pay for
one month.
Trial by summary court-martial provides a simplified procedure for the
resolution of charges involving incidents of misconduct. The summary
court-martial consists of one officer who, depending upon Service policies
and practice, is a judge advocate (a military attorney). The maximum
punishment a summary court-martial may impose is considerably less than a
special or general court-martial. The accused must consent to be tried by a
summary court-martial.
