Waste Water: Put Water to Good Use

Water covers 70% of the earth’s surface and the oceans hold about 96.5% of all the earth’s water. Water is the key to life, it is essential for our bodies to function. In the future, there may not be a big enough supply of freshwater. Supplies are drying up, but there is other water that can be used. Waste water.

UN-backed experts project “a rapid increase in the use of treated waste water for farming and other purposes worldwide,” after a study was completed by Japan’s Tottori University and U.N.University’s Canadian-based Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH). Waste water has been overlooked by companies and governments. That’s probably due to the cost. Of the 181 nations studied, only 55 had information on waste water generation, treatment and re-use.

Director of UNU-INWEH, Zafar Adeel, says “Properly treated, waste water is a huge economic resource.” The report emphasized that recycling water using equipment to treat the waster water can be cheaper in the long term, instead of pumping water from deep aquifers.

Another water expert, Per-Arne Malmqvist, an associate of the Stockholm International Water Institute, said treatment costs are coming down. This puts an even more positive light on the situation. It was also reported that Orange County, California found it cheaper to recycle waste water into drinking water than alternatives such as pumping it from the distant Colorado River.

A solution posed by another author to the UNU-INWEH study is to keep costs down by ordering the purity, categories in the order he suggests would be drinking water, food/crop water, and water for crops like biofuels. Studies have provided many solutions. There is one sure thing to expect in water’s future. The use of waste water worldwide will increase.
