📰 News we're reading

1. Bidding Farewell: Southern Elementary welcomes students, teachers back for last first day (abc45.com) — Southern Elementary in Guilford County has welcomed students back for its final first day, beginning a bittersweet last year before the Greensboro-area school closes under the district's consolidation plan. Families, staff, and former students are grappling with the loss of a tight-knit community as children prepare to move to Sumner Elementary and the new Allen Jay Elementary, slated to open in 2027.

2. Greensboro, NC: Two Hospitalized After Aggravated Assault at Four Seasons Mall (theunionstar.com) — Two people were hospitalized after an aggravated assault Sunday evening inside Four Seasons Town Centre in Greensboro, and police say the investigation is still active with no suspect information released yet. The attack, which happened during busy back-to-school shopping, caused confusion as stores closed early and heavy police and EMS responded on scene and nearby. Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact police or Crime Stoppers.

3. The 10 Largest Cities in North Carolina, Ranked by Population (hiphopnc.com) — Greensboro earns a prominent spot in a new ranking of North Carolina's largest cities, highlighted as the biggest city in the Piedmont Triad and third-largest statewide. The piece notes Greensboro's civil rights history, growing downtown, green spaces, and cultural attractions while comparing it with other major cities like Charlotte and Raleigh that are also drawing new residents.

4. Davidson County commissioners vote to remove Flock cameras, end contract (wfmynews2.com) — Davidson County leaders have voted to shut off and remove all Flock license plate reader cameras within 30 days, redirecting $76,000 toward a new mobile command center. The move comes amid national privacy concerns and local resident pushback, and it's notable for Greensboro readers because Greensboro police once used Flock cameras but have since stopped, while nearby Triad agencies say they don't use them.

5. Vols Begin Mock Game Week, Freshman Faizon Brandon Named QB Starter (chattanoogan.com) — A Greensboro native is stepping onto a national stage as former Grimsley High star quarterback Faizon Brandon has been named Tennessee's starting QB for its Sept. 5 season opener. The Volunteers' coaches praised his work ethic and rapid growth after a standout 35-1 high school record, giving Greensboro football fans another reason to watch SEC action this fall.
