Cut Gas Line Prompts Rash of 911 Calls In Huntersville

The smell of gas is lingering near Stumptown and Old Statesville Roads in Huntersville after a line was cut, according to HFD.

HUNTERSVILLE, NC — The smell of natural gas near Stumptown and Old Statesville Roads prompted numerous 911 calls Monday night after a gas line was cut earlier in the day in Huntersville, according to a spokesperson for the town’s fire department.

Crews from the Huntersville Fire Department and Piedmont Natural Gas responded to the cut gas line in the 100 block of Welder Court, however the gas had vented into the air for some time before the leak was contained, HFD spokesman Bill Suthard said Monday evening.

“As the weather changed, the air temperature cooled and with rain in the forecast – the odor continues to linger low to the ground and can be easily smelled by residents,” he said. “This has resulted in numerous 911 calls reporting the odor of natural gas in the areas of Statesville, Stumptown and Old Statesville Roads.”

Residents smelling natural gas in that area of Huntersville do not need to report the smell to 911, he said.

“However,” he added, “if the odor is strong enough, that you smell it from inside your home, please feel free to call 911 and we will respond to check your home.”
